BECAUSE... WISCONSIN

The leaves are about to start changing - get ready for fall hikes! If you're trying to get your nature on, we have some favorite trails near the Milwaukee area that you have to check out. Loew Lake has varied terrain to keep you on your toes. Wehr Nature Center is a hidden gem just 20 minutes from downtown Milwaukee. Lapham Peak has different trails for all skill levels, and if you hoof it up the tower, you can't beat the view! Point Beach is a bit of a drive, but for our money it's the most gorgeous park within 2 hours of Milwaukee, with dunes for days - it feels like someone dropped a slice of California onto Lake Michigan. Try our recs, our find something for yourself - just get out there and explore!

PSLMAO

We loooove cocktails! You can find us crushing margs and daiquiris all summer long, and booze-forward bombers like Old Fashioneds and Negronis all winter. Fall is a weird time of year for cocktails. It doesn't have to be all about pumpkin spice, as even Starbucks is branching out with their newest product, which has us all hot and bothered. But we're torn - would you rather hold on to the last gasps of summer with citrus-y slammers, get your fall on with the flavors of the season, or skip straight to the bracing winter tipples? Let us know below!

BEHIND THE SCENES

Purple Rain, Purple Rain

Up until the 17th century, almost all carrots were purple - could tomatoes go where carrots once were? That may not be as far-fetched as it sounds! Thanks to recent USDA approval, Norfolk Plant Sciences' purple tomato could soon be coming to market. They used genes from snapdragon flowers to produce anthocyanin, which is where blackberries get their color. Like blackberries, these bad boys are chock-full of antioxidants. Keep your eyes peeled!

We'll try anything once...

TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE SLICE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: PURPLE DOOR ICE CREAM

If you know ice cream, you probably know all about Purple Door. Just in case, here's a refresher: former educators Lauren and Steve Schultz launched Purple Door in 2011, selling to grocers and restaurants, and have since opened multiple retail locations. Over 10 years and 200 flavors (!) later, they're still going strong. If you want to treat yourself, head to their scoop shop in Walker's Pint and use code PDICMINI for a free 1 ounce scoop of ice cream with the purchase of a single or double scoop. Code is good through the end of October!
