BECAUSE... WISCONSIN
October or Oktober?
Is it just us or is this year flying by? I mean, this weekend is already October... or should I say Oktober! Wisconsin is arguably one of the best places to get your Oktoberfest on. This weekend, September 29th - October 1st, is the annual Das Beste Oktoberfest USA in La Crosse! Since 1961, when this fest came to WI all the way from Munich, Germany, it has been nothing but fun (and lots and lots of beer). So much so that it's ranked in the Top 10 Best Oktoberfest Celebrations in the country! Are you going to put on your lederhosen and check it out?
THE BIG CHEESE
I’ll Stop the World to Melt With You
Here in Wisconsin, beer and cheese are basically their own food groups. There is a concoction that combines the two - the nectar of the gods known as Beer Cheese Soup. Now, we thought this was some sort of gimmick dreamt up in a marketer's fever dream, but there is actually a history of beer-based soups stretching back to the Middle Ages. This starchy solution was originally pretty simple (often just beer thickened with bread or egg yolks), but it really hit its stride in the Dairy State, where you can now find it in many a Crockpot, often strewn with some popcorn for texture! Kentucky is known for Beer Cheese as well, but those lightweights just use it for dipping. REAL ONES EAT THEIR BEER CHEESE WITH A SPOON.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Oktoberfest is for lovers
By all means, you should definitely check out an Oktoberfest here in the states, but the real mecca of malt is THE Oktoberfest in Munich. Every starting in September, visitors from all over the world eat over half a million chickens and over 100 full oxen, and drink almost SEVEN MILLION liters of beer. That last number might explain why visitors lost (takes deep breath) 570 wallets, 480 cell phones, 400 pairs of keys, 300 pairs of glasses, 280 purses, 100 watches, 5 laptops, 2 wedding rings, 2 French horns (???), a table tennis paddle, and even a dog... don't worry, he was reclaimed! If you're looking to party like a bock star, make the pilgrimage - and take us with you!
