What's up pizza people?!? This is The Slice, the newsletter that's got your back like that friend who reminds you when it's another friend's birthday. What you KNEAD to know:

  • Because... Wisconsin.

  • Behind the Scenes

  • That 90's Meme

THE BIG CHEESE

The State Fair is in full swing, so let's talk about what we do best: CHEESE.

  • In 2021, Wisconsin produced 3.47 BILLION pounds of cheese.

  • If we were a country, we'd rank 4th in the world in cheese production.

  • 48% of all specialty cheese made in the U.S. comes from right here in the Dairy State.

  • There will be 75,000 orders of grilled cheese sold at this year's fair.

  • The winner of the State Fair's first cheese curd eating contest scarfed over FIVE POUNDS of curds.

BECAUSE... WISCONSIN.

When it comes to the #1 Best Fast Food Burger, it's none other than our very own...Culver's. That's right the Double Butterburger with Cheese (my mouth is watering just typing it) is the mightiest, according to Thrillist. Dairyland does it fast and tasty!

BEHIND THE SCENES

Croissants - ever wonder why they're so delicious? So flaky and buttery. Seriously, how do they get like that? The answer is simple: butter!Butter is a key part of French pastry, but its most important role is in laminated doughs. These make up some of the most delicious breakfast pastries around. When making croissants, you flatten your butter and tuck it into the rolled out dough. Once the dough is concealing all the butter, you do your turns. This means you stretch the dough/butter and fold it at least 3 times. This is what gives you that flaky crust we all love so much! When your croissant bakes, all that butter is melting out and creating air pockets, aka the flaky buttery goodness you are about to be wearing on your shirt!

TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE SLICE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY MATILDA BAKEHOUSE

Ahh, the perfect, sunny, late-summer Sunday morning. Just finished my morning stroll and I'm beyond pumped to cruise over to the farmers market for my weekly veggies. I'm starting to feel a little hangry though and for some reason, I'm feeling a lil' extra today. I want to live a little, indulge, maybe skip the avo toast for the 9th day this week 😈. Sure would be nice if there was a scratch-made pain au chocolat or monkey bread somewhere nearby...

Enter... Matilda Bakehouse! They churn out pastries (by hand) that'll give you that seventh-piece-in-a-six-piece-chicken-nugget-order feeling. Find them at farmers' markets and pop-ups all around Milwaukee!
